Scene: An open room off the side of the cubicle farm. Four employees are working diligently to meet a deadline. Various small talk over the hours has included the Kardashians, Nicki Minaj, and Lady Gaga - conversations Allison cannot participate in because she lives in her own bubble that excludes much of society and pop culture. She perks up when she hears two coworkers across the room talking books.
Coworker #1: I really like The Lord of the Rings. The movies are good, but the books are even better. Then again, I love Tolkien.
Coworker #2: What's Tolkien?
Coworker #1: An author. He was good friends with C.S. Lewis, which explains a lot.
Coworker #2: Who's C.S. Lewis?
Coworker #1: He wrote The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Coworker #2: Oh.
Coworker #1: You should read it. If you like to read. I like to read. Sometimes. It's good to read sometimes. But not all the time! I hate people that read all the time.
Coworker #3: stares at Allison
Allison: keeps working so she can go home and finish that book she's reading

Allison! This scene could be taken straight from my life. I wish you sat in the cubicle next to me. :(
ReplyDeleteWe would never get any work done. It'd be lovely!
DeleteI try to exclude the horrors of pop culture, but I know too much about the Kardashians and Honey Boo Boo... and I have never seen either show. Lady Gaga, however, is a GENIUS. And I kinda like some of Nicki Minaj's music. HOWEVER. People who read all the time are the damn best people. Haters gonna hate.
ReplyDeleteI should have said "best damn people" not "damn best people. Damn. I knew that rhythm felt off.
DeleteI don't even know who/what Honey Boo Boo is, because everyone talks about it but no one really clarifies what's going on... they just assume you know. So I'm thankful I don't.
DeleteI read it as "DAYAMN! best people" so it totally worked.
Continue in your blessed ignorance of Honey Boo Boo, you rare blossom. Just bask in your ignorance. BASK.
DeleteThere is nothing wrong with reading all the time! I wish I could read more. I miss it dearly.
ReplyDeleteI don't read ALL the time, have other interests, am social enough, and I'm not reading Tolkien/scifi that stereotypically alienate someone from reality, so I'm ok with it.
DeleteI find people who deal in absolutes to be so hilarious. How can you say you hate someone just because they read all of the time? Talk about a drama queen. ha ha
ReplyDeleteThankfully it's a drama-free environment; the coworker in question doesn't really know me, so wasn't trying to start anything. But I'm with you - it's so hilarious when people say things like that. Reflects more on them than who they claim to hate!
DeleteI think it is good to read all the time. You go girl.
ReplyDelete+Victoria+
I'm a fan of it! PLUS it gets me mentioned on other people's blogs, hehe.
DeleteThat's the spirit!
ReplyDeleteBRB getting on train to kick ass of person who doesn't know who C.S. Lewis/J.R.R. Tolkien are.
ReplyDeleteI dunno if my comment went through or not, so this might get posted twice (sorry!): BRB boarding train to kick ass of person who doesn't know who Lewis/Tolkien are.
